RIPTA Litter Free Initiatives

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) is committed to protecting the environment – and that means doing what it can to Keep Rhody Litter Free.  RIPTA recently switched its single-use paper fare system to Wave– a new smart fare technology. Passengers can now pay their bus fare with a reloadable smart card or with the Wave mobile app, thus reducing the need for paper and potential litter.

As part of an effort to reduce litter, RIPTA will be launching a Be A Shelter Helper program. This program will encourage passengers (and the general public) to report unkempt bus shelters to RIPTA.

Passengers will be encouraged to report the shelter through a submission form on RIPTA.com or by calling Customer Service.

In addition to this, RIPTA will be issuing an RFP for bus shelters that will include trash receptacles as part of submission.
